#311: The September Issue (2009)

Hmm... I didn't learn much about Anna Wintour, the brain behind Vogue magazine. Nor did we get much out of the other senior editor, Grace Goodington -- though she is more open in revealing herself than Wintour. The documentary doesn't try to chronicle "the making" of the September issue itself either; that would have been quite tedious. Oddly, the movie was rather elegant to watch and enjoyable. Yet, I still don't know what I saw.

#309: A Serious Man (2009)

This movie opens with the quote "Receive everything with simplicity everything that happens to you" and perhaps that's how one should approach this movie. I mean, the movie is funny for the most part, but in some scenes it feels if the Coen brothers were trying too hard to be humorous. I also refuse to believe there's much subtext within the movie. Yeah it's a dark comedy about a married professor whose life is falling apart. Whatever. Maybe I had to be a Jew to enjoy it more.

#281: Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)

I didn't think it's possible to make a movie with a giant robot and a 50-ft tall woman a dull one. Congratulations DreamWorks. Also, it's a crime to cast Hugh Laurie as a cockroach -- even if it's Doctor Cockroach.
